B2 is no longer optional
Since 1 January 2026, French naturalisation requires level B2. The DELF B2 is accepted — and it is valid for life (unlike the TCF/TEF, valid for 2 years). Failing the exam means €100 to €250 in re-registration fees and often several months waiting for the next session, with your application delayed just as long.

Start for freeHow many weeks to prepare for the DELF B2?
There is no single timeline: it all depends on your starting level. Here are three typical paces. Consistency (a little every day) matters more than the length of each session.
You are already at a shaky B2
Consolidation: full mock exams, time management, writing and speaking methodology. One mock session per week.
You have a solid B1
Stepping up: working on all 4 parts, building vocabulary and linking words, 2-3 corrected writing tasks per week.
You are starting from a developing B1
Full progression: grammar foundations, daily comprehension (audio + texts), then a shift to full parts and mock exams.
Whatever pace you choose, always finish with at least two mock exams in real conditions to get used to the clock.

DELF B2, TCF or TEF: what is the difference?
The DELF B2 is a diploma valid for life; the TCF and TEF are tests whose results are only valid for 2 years. For French naturalisation, all three are accepted.
| Criterion | DELF B2 | TCF | TEF |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nature | Diploma | Positioning test | Positioning test |
| Validity | For life | 2 years | 2 years |
| Result | Certified B2 level (diploma) | Score placed on a CEFR scale | Score placed on a CEFR scale |
| Naturalisation | Accepted | Accepted | Accepted |
The DELF B2 (and the DALF C1/C2) are recognised, under the decree of 22 December 2025, as diplomas attesting the B2 level now required for French naturalisation — and exempt holders from the language test. Unlike a test (TCF/TEF, valid for 2 years), the DELF is a diploma valid for life.
